About this Film
Racing Home, a highly personal rumination on identity, combines 8mm and 16mm footage shot in Ontario and Europe. Racing Home was unfinished at the time of its maker’s untimely death, in 1996. Marian McMahon’s surviving partner, filmmaker Phil Hoffman, has assembled a nonlinear, interactive exploration of the unfinished film, using the Korsakow System. As an exercise in ‘posthumous cinema’ (a phrase coined by Monika Kin Gagnon), Racing Home allows the viewer to join Hoffman in sifting through the enigmatic fragments comprising McMahon’s contextual insights about her own ethnicity and race.
